Darius III

Darius III was the last king of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, defeated by Alexander the Great in a series of decisive battles that ended Persian imperial power. He faced Alexander at Issus (333 BCE) and Gaugamela (331 BCE), both times commanding vastly larger armies but losing due to Alexander's superior tactics and the near-magical effect Alexander had on his troops' morale. After Gaugamela he fled eastward but was stabbed by his own satrap Bessus in 330 BCE as Alexander's pursuit closed in.
