Datis
Datis was a Median general in Persian service who co-commanded the Persian punitive expedition against Athens and Eretria in 490 BCE alongside Artaphernes the Younger, appointed by Darius I. His forces successfully sacked and enslaved Eretria before sailing to Attica, where they were decisively defeated by the Athenians under Miltiades at the Battle of Marathon. The defeat forced Datis to withdraw the Persian fleet without having achieved the main objective of punishing Athens.
