Demosthenes

Demosthenes overcame a speech impediment to become Athens's most powerful voice against Macedonian encroachment. Despite his efforts, Athens and Thebes were defeated at Chaeronea (338 BCE). After Alexander's death he led a final resistance; cornered, he poisoned himself rather than surrender to Antipater's agents.
