Dido (Elissa)
Semi-legendary Tyrian princess who, according to tradition, fled her brother Pygmalion's tyranny with a band of nobles and founded Carthage on the North African coast around 814 BCE; later immortalised (with considerable poetic licence) as Aeneas's doomed lover in Virgil's Aeneid.
