Diocletian

Diocletian voluntarily abdicated in 305 CE — the only emperor to do so and retire peacefully. His Edict on Maximum Prices (301 CE) is the most detailed surviving ancient price list. His Tetrarchy system stabilised the empire temporarily; his persecution of Christians was reversed by Constantine's Edict of Milan (313 CE).
