Don John of Austria
Illegitimate son of Charles V, given command of the Holy League fleet at twenty-four and victorious at Lepanto in 1571 — the last great battle fought under oar, and the end of the Ottoman reputation for invincibility at sea. The strategic result was smaller than the symbolic one: the Ottomans rebuilt their fleet within a year.
