Édouard Manet
The bridge between Realism and Impressionism. Manet's Olympia (1863) and Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe (1863) scandalized the Paris Salon with their unflinching modernity and flat, direct paint. He documented the Paris Commune (1871) and the Siege of Paris from inside the city — a National Guard officer who never left. He is the true father of modern painting even though he refused to exhibit with the Impressionists.
