Edward Gibbon

Gibbon wrote six volumes tracing Rome's decline from the height of the Antonines to the fall of Constantinople. His thesis that Christianity weakened civic virtue was controversial. His prose style set the standard for historical writing in English. Decline and Fall remains in print and widely read after 250 years.
