Edward II

Son of Edward I whose reign was dominated by baronial opposition to his royal favourites, particularly Piers Gaveston, and culminated in the catastrophic defeat at Bannockburn in 1314 which secured Scottish independence. Deposed by his wife Isabella of France and her lover Roger Mortimer, he was imprisoned in Berkeley Castle and murdered. He was the first English monarch to be formally deposed.
