Edward VII
Son of Queen Victoria who waited until 59 to become king and transformed the monarchy into a more modern, social institution, earning the nickname 'Peacemaker' for his diplomatic efforts in Europe. He was instrumental in forging the Entente Cordiale with France in 1904, realigning British foreign policy away from splendid isolation. His love of society, fine food, horses, and women made him enormously popular.
