Emperor Jovian
Roman emperor for eight months (363-364 CE) after Julian's death in Persia. Made the humiliating Peace of Jovian with Shapur II to extract the Roman army from Mesopotamia, surrendering Nisibis and five fortresses — territory Persia had sought for a century. Died of asphyxiation from burning charcoal in his bedroom, possibly an accident, possibly assassination, after a reign of only eight months.
