Emperor Julian the Apostate
Roman emperor (361-363 CE) who rejected the Christianity in which he had been raised and sought to revive traditional Roman and Greek polytheism. Called 'the Apostate' by Christians. Led a disastrous Persian campaign in 363 CE, reaching but unable to take Ctesiphon, then burned his supply fleet and died of a lance wound during the retreat. A brilliant intellectual; his writings survive extensively.
