Emperor Taizu of Song

Zhao Kuangyin (Emperor Taizu) was a military commander who seized the throne from the Zhou dynasty in 960 through the Chenqiao mutiny and founded the Song dynasty. He reunified most of China after the fragmented Five Dynasties period through a combination of military campaigns and political negotiation, famously hosting a banquet at which he persuaded his generals to relinquish their military commands in exchange for peaceful retirement — subordinating the army to civil authority. His reforms established the examination-based Confucian administration that characterised Song governance and shaped Chinese bureaucracy for centuries.
