Enrico Fermi
Enrico Fermi created the world's first nuclear reactor (Chicago Pile-1) on 2 December 1942, demonstrating the first controlled self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction. He was a central figure of the Manhattan Project and won the 1938 Nobel Prize in Physics. The element fermium and the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory are named in his honour.
