Ephialtes of Athens
Athenian democratic politician who in 462/461 BCE stripped the Areopagus council of nearly all its political powers, completing the transition to radical democracy in Athens. He was the political mentor of Pericles and the practical architect of Athenian democracy in its mature form. Ephialtes was assassinated shortly after his reforms, probably by oligarchic opponents; Pericles then led the democratic faction.
