Ernest Hemingway

American novelist and journalist awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. A Farewell to Arms (1929), drawn from his WW1 service as an ambulance driver on the Italian front, and For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940), based on his reporting of the Spanish Civil War, established his minimalist style and themes of war and loss.
