Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor
Ferdinand II's determined effort to re-Catholicise the Holy Roman Empire triggered the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). His Edict of Restitution (1629) galvanised Protestant resistance. By the time of his death the war had turned against him through Swedish and French intervention.
