Field Marshal Erich von Manstein

Erich von Manstein is widely regarded as one of Germany's most capable Second World War commanders, credited with devising the 1940 plan for the invasion of France through the Ardennes and later commanding Army Group Don's relief attempt toward encircled Stalingrad and Army Group South's counterattack at Kharkov. He helped plan Operation Citadel, the German offensive at Kursk in 1943, before being dismissed by Hitler in 1944 over strategic disagreements; he was later convicted of war crimes relating to atrocities committed by units under his command.
