Field Marshal Friedrich Paulus
Friedrich Paulus commanded the German Sixth Army at Stalingrad, where it became encircled by the Soviet Operation Uranus counteroffensive in November 1942. Promoted to Field Marshal by Hitler days before the surrender -- a rank no German field marshal had ever surrendered while holding, a pointed signal he was expected to die or take his own life -- Paulus surrendered anyway in February 1943, and later cooperated with the Soviets, testifying against former colleagues at Nuremberg.
