Field Marshal Lord Kitchener
Herbert Kitchener, already a celebrated imperial soldier from campaigns in Sudan and South Africa, became Britain's Secretary of State for War in 1914, famously predicting a long war when most expected a short one and launching the mass volunteer recruitment drive immortalized in the 'Your Country Needs You' poster. He championed the disastrous Gallipoli campaign and drowned in June 1916 when the cruiser HMS Hampshire, carrying him to Russia, struck a mine off Orkney.
