Field Marshal Sir John French

Sir John French commanded the British Expeditionary Force during the opening campaigns of the First World War, including the retreat from Mons and the First Battle of the Marne in 1914. Criticized for his handling of the 1915 Battle of Loos, he was replaced as commander-in-chief by Douglas Haig in December 1915.
