Flamininus

Flamininus defeated the Macedonian phalanx with Roman legions at Cynoscephalae, ending the Second Macedonian War. His proclamation of Greek freedom in 196 BCE was genuinely popular but served Roman interests — the 'free' Greeks were now Roman clients. His later pursuit of Hannibal (who eventually poisoned himself to avoid capture) showed Rome's reach.
