Flavius Aetius
The commander who held the western empire together for two decades by playing its invaders against each other, and who beat Attila at the Catalaunian Plains in 451 with an army largely of Visigoths. Valentinian III killed him personally three years later. Called the last of the Romans, which is less a compliment to him than a statement about what followed.
