François Christophe Kellermann
François Christophe Kellermann (1735-1820) commanded the French Army of the Centre at Valmy on 20 September 1792, where the steadiness of his artillery halted the Prussian invasion and saved Paris. A professional soldier of the old royal army who served the Republic through the revolutionary rupture, he was created Duc de Valmy and made Marshal of the Empire by Napoleon, representing the continuity of professional military expertise across the Revolution.
