Francis II / Francis I of Austria

Francis II was the last Holy Roman Emperor (1792–1806) and, as Francis I, the first Emperor of Austria (1804–1835). Twice defeated by Napoleon — at Austerlitz (1805) and Wagram (1809) — he dissolved the Holy Roman Empire in 1806 under French pressure. Under Metternich's guidance Austria recovered its great-power standing and emerged as host and co-architect of the Congress of Vienna, where Francis secured Austria's position as the dominant conservative power in Central Europe.
