The supreme master of the German art song (Lied), Schubert composed over 600 songs, 9 symphonies, and vast quantities of chamber music in a career cut short at 31. His Winterreise song cycle is considered the pinnacle of the Romantic vocal tradition. Largely unrecognised in his lifetime, he was posthumously acknowledged as a giant of the Viennese Classical–Romantic transition.
