Frederick Douglass

Formerly enslaved man who escaped bondage in 1838 and became the foremost abolitionist orator and writer in the United States; his 1845 Narrative became a bestseller; founded the abolitionist newspaper The North Star in 1847; advised President Lincoln, and later served as US Marshal for the District of Columbia.
