Frederick II of Prussia

Frederick II, known as Frederick the Great, was King of Prussia from 1740 to 1786 and one of history's most gifted military commanders. He transformed Prussia from a minor German state into a great power through battlefield genius, relentless drilling of his army, and enlightened domestic reforms. A patron of the arts and a flautist who corresponded with Voltaire, he embodied the tension between Enlightenment ideals and the brutal realities of eighteenth-century warfare.
