Gaius Gracchus

Gaius Gracchus was a Roman tribune and younger brother of Tiberius who pursued an even broader program of populist reforms, including grain subsidies, road building, and extending citizenship rights to Italian allies. His political program posed a fundamental challenge to senatorial power, and the Senate used unprecedented violence to suppress his movement, leading to Gaius's death in 121 BC. The Gracchi brothers are seen as precursors to the conflicts between populares and optimates that would ultimately destroy the Republic.
