Gaius Julius Caesar

Gaius Julius Caesar was a Roman general, statesman, and writer who played a critical role in the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. His conquest of Gaul (58–50 BCE) vastly extended Roman territory and brought him immense wealth and military reputation; his crossing of the Rubicon in 49 BCE launched a civil war that he won, making him dictator of Rome. He was assassinated on the Ides of March (15 March) 44 BCE by a group of senators led by Brutus and Cassius who feared his ambitions for kingship.
