Gaius Marius

Marius's military reforms (allowing landless citizens to enlist, providing equipment from the state, organising into cohorts loyal to their general) transformed Roman warfare and inadvertently created the conditions for civil war. He defeated the Jugurthine War and the Cimbri and Teuton invasions. His rivalry with Sulla led to Rome's first military occupation of the city.
