Galerius
Galerius was a Roman co-emperor who served as Caesar under Diocletian and later as Augustus of the eastern empire. He was a chief architect of the Great Persecution of Christians launched in 303 CE, ordering the destruction of churches and scriptures and the imprisonment of clergy. Dying painfully of a severe illness, he issued the Edict of Serdica (311 CE) — the first imperial edict granting Christians legal status and toleration — only days before his death, an act that paved the way for Constantine's later embrace of Christianity.
