Egyptian President (1956–1970) who nationalised the Suez Canal Company in July 1956, triggering the Suez Crisis; championed pan-Arab nationalism and Arab socialism, created the short-lived United Arab Republic with Syria (1958–61), and led Egypt to defeat in the Six-Day War of 1967, losing the Sinai Peninsula.
