General Alexander Samsonov

Alexander Samsonov commanded the Russian Second Army in its advance into East Prussia in August 1914, which was encircled and destroyed by German forces under Hindenburg and Ludendorff at the Battle of Tannenberg. Facing the destruction of his army and personal disgrace, Samsonov is generally believed to have taken his own life during the retreat.
