General Otto Liman von Sanders
Otto Liman von Sanders was a German general sent to reorganize and command the Ottoman Fifth Army defending the Gallipoli peninsula, where his preparations and the tenacious defense he organized -- alongside Ottoman commanders including Mustafa Kemal -- defeated the Allied landings of 1915. He remained a senior military adviser to the Ottoman Empire through the rest of the war.
