General Robert Nivelle
Robert Nivelle rose to prominence commanding French counterattacks that recaptured ground at Verdun in late 1916, and was promoted to Commander-in-Chief of the French Army on the strength of that success. His confident promise of a war-winning breakthrough led to the disastrous Nivelle Offensive of April 1917, whose enormous casualties for minimal gain triggered widespread mutinies in the French Army and his own dismissal.
