George F. Kennan
George Kennan was the American diplomat and strategist whose 'Long Telegram' of 1946 and 'X Article' of 1947 provided the intellectual foundation for the containment doctrine that guided US Cold War strategy for four decades. A profound analyst of Russian history and Soviet psychology, he argued that Soviet expansionism was rooted in ideological insecurity rather than traditional great-power ambition, and that patient counterpressure would eventually cause the system to moderate or collapse — a prediction vindicated in 1991. He spent much of his later career frustrated that containment had been militarised and globalised far beyond what he had intended, becoming one of the most articulate critics of US Cold War overreach.
