George I

First Hanoverian king of Great Britain who came to the throne under the Act of Settlement as the nearest Protestant heir, despite speaking little English and preferring Hanover. His distance from British politics inadvertently strengthened the role of the Cabinet and Prime Minister, with Robert Walpole emerging as the first de facto Prime Minister. His reign saw the Jacobite rising of 1715 and the South Sea Bubble of 1720.
