The painter who put weight and grief into figures that Byzantine convention had kept flat and symbolic. The Scrovegni Chapel frescoes were paid for by a banker's son atoning for his father's usury, which is the period in miniature: new commercial money buying salvation and getting the beginning of European naturalism in return.
