Gnaeus Julius Agricola
Governor of Britain who pushed Roman arms into Scotland and won at Mons Graupius, and whose reputation rests unusually heavily on his son-in-law having been Tacitus. The biography is the fullest portrait of a Roman provincial governor that survives, and also a political document written under a regime the author despised.
