Helmuth von Moltke the Elder
Helmuth von Moltke the Elder served as Chief of the Prussian Great General Staff from 1857 to 1888, transforming it into the most effective military planning body in the world. He pioneered the use of railways for rapid strategic mobilisation, delegation of tactical initiative to subordinate commanders (Auftragstaktik), and comprehensive war-gaming of campaigns before they began. His direction of operations in three wars produced decisive victories through superior speed and concentration. Moltke's methods became the template for modern general staff systems across Europe.
