Henry II

First Plantagenet king who restored royal authority after the Anarchy and built an extensive Angevin Empire stretching from Scotland to the Pyrenees. He instituted sweeping legal reforms that laid the foundations of English common law, including royal courts and jury trials. His conflict with Archbishop Thomas Becket, murdered in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170, and rebellions led by his own sons clouded his later reign.
