Henry V

Henry V was the last of the Salian dynasty, who came to power through a rebellion against his own father Henry IV in 1105. The central achievement of his reign was the resolution of the Investiture Controversy through the Concordat of Worms in 1122. This compromise distinguished between the spiritual investiture of bishops (reserved to the Church) and the investiture with temporal lands and duties (retained by the emperor). Henry V died without legitimate heirs in 1125, ending the Salian dynasty, and the German princes used the succession crisis to assert their right to elect the king freely.
