Henry VII of Luxembourg

Henry VII of Luxembourg was elected King of Germany in 1308 following the murder of Albert I. He is best remembered as the emperor whose descent into Italy inspired Dante Alighieri's fervent hope for a restoration of Roman imperial order. Henry's Italian campaign of 1310-1313 was ambitious: he descended into the peninsula aiming to pacify the warring Guelph and Ghibelline factions. He was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by papal legates in Rome in 1312, the last emperor to receive a full imperial coronation in the traditional style for many years. Henry died near Siena in August 1313, possibly from malaria, crushing the hopes of Dante and the Ghibelline faction across Italy.
