Hephaestion
Hephaestion was a Macedonian nobleman, general, and the closest companion of Alexander the Great, described by ancient sources as the person Alexander loved most. He served in key military commands throughout the Persian campaign and was appointed joint commander of the Companion cavalry and later given administrative roles governing conquered territories. His sudden death from fever in 324 BCE at Ecbatana devastated Alexander, who ordered elaborate mourning, a magnificent funeral pyre at Babylon, and reportedly had the physician who attended Hephaestion crucified.
