Histiaeus
Histiaeus was the tyrant of Miletus who served as a loyal lieutenant of Darius I of Persia before secretly instigating the Ionian Revolt of 499 BCE by sending a message tattooed on a slave's shaved head to his son-in-law Aristagoras. Darius kept him as an 'honored guest' (effectively a captive) at Susa; Histiaeus escaped and caused trouble in the Aegean, but never regained real power. He was captured by the Persian satrap Artaphernes and executed in 493 BCE, his body impaled and head sent to Darius.
