Hugh Capet
Hugh Capet founded the Capetian dynasty in 987 when elected King of the Franks, ending Carolingian rule. He consolidated royal authority around the Île-de-France and secured the succession by having his son Robert crowned during his lifetime. His dynasty would rule France for over three centuries.
