Hussein bin Ali, Sharif of Mecca

Hussein bin Ali, Sharif and Emir of Mecca, led the Arab Revolt against Ottoman rule beginning in 1916, in alliance with Britain and supported by British liaison officers including T.E. Lawrence. He proclaimed himself King of the Hejaz in 1916, but his hoped-for pan-Arab kingdom was undercut by the secret Anglo-French Sykes-Picot Agreement, and he was ultimately defeated and exiled by the rival Ibn Saud in 1924-25.
