Ioannis Kapodistrias

Greek statesman (1776–1831) who served as joint Foreign Minister of the Russian Empire under Tsar Alexander I before returning to Greece as its first head of state (1827–1831); he modernised administration, established educational institutions, and sought to unify the fractious revolutionary factions before being assassinated in Nafplio.
