J. Robert Oppenheimer

American theoretical physicist (1904–1967) who directed the Los Alamos Laboratory from 1943 to 1945, overseeing the design and assembly of the first nuclear devices tested at Trinity on 16 July 1945 and dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki; later stripped of his security clearance in 1954 amid McCarthyite accusations, rehabilitated posthumously in 2022.
